Everything You Need to Know

Planning a whale swim in Tonga? We've answered the most common questions from travellers around the world to help you feel prepared and excited for your adventure.

When & Where

When is whale season in Tonga?

Whale season in Tonga runs from July through to the end of October. Each winter, humpback whales travel thousands of kilometres from Antarctic waters to Tonga's warm, sheltered bays to give birth and nurse their calves. It's one of the few places on Earth where you can swim alongside these gentle giants.

When is the best time to go?

August and September are the peak months — this is when you'll find the most mother-and-calf encounters, the calmest seas, and the best underwater visibility. These dates are also the first to sell out, so we recommend booking as early as you can!

Are whale sightings guaranteed?

These are wild, majestic animals in their natural habitat, so we can never promise a sighting on every trip. However, Tonga's whale season offers exceptionally high chances of encounters. On days when swimming isn't possible due to conditions, you may still see whales breaching and playing from the boat — which is an incredible sight in itself. If conditions prevent the tour entirely, we'll work with you on rescheduling or a refund.

Where do tours depart from?

All tours depart from Tongatapu, Tonga's main island. There's no need for extra domestic flights or boat transfers to outer islands — you'll board right from the wharf and be in whale territory before you know it.

Safety & Regulatory Guidelines

What are the rules for swimming with whales?

Tonga has regulations in place to protect both whales and participants. Key rules we strictly abide by include:

  • Swimming with whales is only legal from a licensed commercial operator's vessel with certified guides.
  • Group size limits: No more than 4 swimmers plus one certified guide in the water at any time.
  • Maximum interaction time: Each encounter is limited (often no more than 90 minutes), followed by mandatory rest periods.
  • Distance rules: Swimmers must not approach closer than 5 metres (16 ft). Vessels must not approach closer than 10 metres when dropping off swimmers. Only licensed operators may approach within 300 metres.
  • No SCUBA gear, artificial lighting, or loud noises near whales.
  • Boats operate only during daytime hours (no activities between 4 pm and 5 am). Total on-water time is limited to about 7 hours per day.
Is there a mandatory safety briefing?

Yes — every guest receives a thorough safety briefing before we leave the wharf. Our guides walk you through how to interact with whales respectfully, water entry and exit procedures, hand signals, and what to do in the unlikely event of an emergency. First-time swimmers are especially welcome — we'll make sure you feel confident and ready!

How does time in the water work?

Every encounter is different — that's part of the magic! Sometimes you'll have several short swims as we move between groups of whales, other times you might enjoy a longer, more relaxed session with a curious mother and calf. Our guides rotate swimmers in small groups to keep things fair, safe, and within regulations.

What if a tour is cancelled due to weather?

Safety always comes first. Our guides monitor the weather and sea conditions continuously, and if it's not safe to go out, we won't. In that case, we'll work with you to reschedule to another date or arrange a full refund. We recommend building a couple of buffer days into your travel plans just in case — the ocean is wild and wonderful, and flexibility is part of the adventure!

Is your equipment safe and well-maintained?

All our equipment — wetsuits, snorkel sets, fins, and safety flotation devices — is well-maintained and checked regularly. We carry first aid kits on every trip and follow all maritime and safety standards. Your comfort and safety are never compromised.

Health & Fitness

Do I need to be a strong swimmer?

You should be a confident swimmer who's comfortable in open water. You don't need to be an Olympic athlete — just able to swim and float comfortably using a snorkel. If you or a family member is less confident in the water, you're still very welcome to come along and watch from the boat, which is an amazing experience in itself!

What about seasickness?

It can happen, especially on choppier days. We recommend taking seasickness medication at least 30 minutes before departure if you know you're prone. Ginger tablets and acupressure wristbands also help some travellers. The good news? Once you're in the water with the whales, you won't be thinking about anything else!

Can I bring a camera?

Absolutely! We encourage you to capture the magic. Waterproof cameras and GoPros are perfect for underwater shots. Just remember: no flash photography near the whales — this is a regulatory requirement to protect them. Your guide can suggest the best angles and moments for incredible photos.

What if I'm pregnant or have a medical condition?

Please let us know when you book — we want to make sure every guest is safe and comfortable. We may ask for a doctor's clearance for certain conditions. Pregnant guests should consult their doctor before booking. Our guides are experienced in accommodating guests with different needs, and we'll do our best to make it work for you.

Can children participate?

Yes — and we love welcoming families! Our Family Package is designed especially for parents and children to share this incredible experience together. Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times. Our guides manage in-water time based on each child's age and swimming ability, and younger children who aren't ready to swim can still enjoy watching whales from the boat — which is magical in its own right.

Booking Tips & What to Plan For

How far in advance should I book?

As early as you can! Tonga whale season is one of the world's best-kept secrets, but word is spreading fast. Peak months (August–September) book out weeks in advance, especially for weekends. If you've got your travel dates sorted, don't wait — secure your spot and start counting down to the adventure of a lifetime.

What should I bring?
  • Reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses — the Tongan sun is beautiful but strong!
  • A towel and a dry change of clothes for after your swim
  • A light layer or windbreaker — it can get breezy on the boat after being in the water
  • A waterproof camera or GoPro (no flash near the whales — but you'll want to capture every moment!)
  • Motion sickness medication if you're prone — take it before you board
  • Your sense of adventure and a big smile!
What's the water temperature like?

The water in Tonga during whale season sits at a beautiful 24–26 °C (≈75–79 °F) — warm enough to be comfortable, cool enough to be refreshing. We provide short wetsuits (2–3 mm) which are perfect for the conditions and help with buoyancy too.

What if my tour gets postponed due to weather?

It's a great idea to build a couple of buffer days into your Tonga trip. The ocean is beautifully unpredictable — sometimes weather or sea conditions mean we need to postpone. If that happens, we'll work with you to find an alternative date. Think of it as extra time to explore Tonga's stunning islands, cafes, and beaches!
